Dev Advice, if anyone may. Please.

Hi,

If I may ask for your advice :

I would like to dev from Bottom Up an app.

It has to have scalability in user number.

Real time elements integration.

And tools that can me added, modified and or upgraded as you go.

MySQL back end.

Simple interface.

Do YOU think that Lisp is a good choice ?

What is the learning curve for it if you could give even an erroneus evaluation of a rate.

1 - 12 months.

Any other app for a better, quicker solution.

Thank you for your patience.

Lazlo.
What it is, what it ain't.

In order to immedietly start a flamewar, I'm going to lay down a few definitions that this tribe was created to operate with. We're concerned with languages where:

* Everything is an object
* Types are dynamic

Prototype based languages like Self are intended to be included as they meet the above.

This neccesarily excludes languages like C++: "I invented the term Object-Oriented, and I can tell you I did not have C++ in mind."
— Alan Kay

New to object-oriented programming? Curious about it? Check out the following:

* http://www.squeak.org/
* http://www.research.sun.com/self/

Have a different point of view? Then post! :-)

Alan Kay lectures (video)

If the name Alan Kay doesn't mean anything to you, it should. He coined the term "object oriented', and is essentially the elder statesman of the community. He's absolutely mesmerizing to listen to, especially when you get an insight on where he comes from and why he says what he says.

If you're serious about OOP, then this should be considered required material:

http://www.educause.edu/conference/e98/webcast98.html -- "The future hasn't happened yet."

This is the basic "meet Alan Kay" video, a lecture where he's addressing educators (his core concern and the motivation behind SmallTalk, OOP, et al.)

http://www.lisarein.com/alankay/tour.html -- towards the top are a link to the videos. -- Some redundancy with the above video, but including a really cool tool of the Wonderland concept -- an VR collaboration environment that you'll simply have to see to believe.

Objective-C

Perhaps the closest thing to a real oop in common use (thanks largely to NeXT/Apple) is Objective-C

here's a few pointers to explore it with if you've not had the, erm, pleasure.

Apple Developer General Document: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Cocoa/Conceptual/ObjectiveC/index.html

General FAQ: http://www.faqs.org/faqs/computer-lang/Objective-C/faq/

GNU Objective C Library (Guide): http://www.delorie.com/gnu/docs/libobjects/libobjects_toc.html

Here's the meat, stolen from the first document referenced:

"Objective-C’s dynamism enables the construction of sophisticated development tools. An interface to the runtime system provides access to information about running applications, so it’s possible to develop tools that monitor, intervene, and reveal the underlying structure and activity of Objective-C applications."

dynamic language wizards videos

There are three qt4 videos of a three part session on dynamic languages here: http://www.ai.mit.edu/projects/dynlangs/wizards-panels.html

Most of the panelists are former lisp/dylan people (David Moon, Guy Steele, Scott McKay, etc). Food for thought, if you're interested in computer languages.
